Safer gambling tools, explained properly
Every GB-licensed casino must offer tools that put you in control. Most players never open the menu. This guide covers what each tool does, when to use it, and which ones work across every site at once.
Tools inside every licensed casino
Deposit limits
A cap on how much you can pay into your account per day, week or month. It's the single most effective tool on this list because it works on money before it becomes "balance" — psychologically, funds inside a casino account already feel spent. Set a limit before your first deposit, when the number reflects your budget rather than your mood. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately at licensed casinos; raising one is deliberately slowed down so it can't happen in the heat of a session.
Reality checks
Pop-up reminders at intervals you choose, showing how long you've played and, typically, your net position. Casino interfaces are designed to make time slip by; a reality check every 30 or 60 minutes puts a clock back on the wall. Treat each one as a genuine decision point, not a box to dismiss.
Time-outs
A short self-imposed break — usually anywhere from 24 hours to six weeks — during which you cannot log in, and the operator must not send you marketing. Time-outs suit the moment when gambling is fine in general but too present right now: after a heavy session, during a stressful month, around payday if that's your weak point.
Self-exclusion
The strongest per-site measure: a lock of typically six months to five years that the operator is obliged to enforce. Your account closes, marketing stops, and the casino must take reasonable steps to prevent you opening a new account during the period. Self-exclusion is the right tool when you've decided a particular site — or gambling generally — is doing you harm.
Tools that work everywhere at once
GAMSTOP
Excluding yourself site by site has an obvious flaw: there's always another site. GAMSTOP closes that gap. One free registration excludes you from every online gambling operator licensed in Great Britain — all of them, including every casino compared on this site — for six months, one year or five years. It takes effect within 24 hours, and it cannot be cancelled early: when the period ends, it doesn't simply lapse, you'd have to actively return. If you're at the point of researching exclusion, register with GAMSTOP first and deal with individual sites second.
Bank gambling blocks
Most major UK banks — and virtually all app-based banks — offer a free gambling block on debit cards. Licensed gambling transactions are coded so your bank can refuse them, and most blocks include a cooling-off delay of up to 72 hours before they can be switched off, which is precisely the point: it separates the impulse from the ability to act on it. Check your banking app under card controls.
Blocking software
Independent apps can block gambling sites and apps across your devices entirely — catching what account-level tools can't, including unlicensed sites. GamCare and GambleAware both signpost current options, some of which are free for UK users.
Layering: how the tools fit together
These tools work best in combination, matched to how serious things are:
- Playing happily, want to keep it that way? Deposit limit plus a reality check. Two minutes of setup, no downside.
- Sessions creeping up? Tighten the deposit limit and take a time-out. Notice how the break feels — that's information.
- Gambling causing real harm? GAMSTOP, a bank block and a call to the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133, free, 24/7) on the same day. Each blocks a different route back.
None of this is a substitute for human support. The helpline advisers at GamCare talk to people at every stage — including "I'm probably fine but something feels off". Free, confidential, no waiting list to start a conversation.
How this connects to our reviews
Player protection is one of the five areas behind every grade on this site. The legal minimum is the same for all licensed casinos; what differs is whether the tools are easy to find and genuinely encouraged, or buried three menus deep. Casinos that treat these tools as a feature rather than an obligation score better with us — the details are on How we rate.
